local area network (LAN): A computer network covering a local area, such as a home, office or small group of buildings.

liquid crystal display (LCD): A digital display that uses liquid crystal cells.

Lightweight Extensible Authentication Protocol (LEAP): A Cisco-proprietary wireless encryption technique.

line of sight: Network communication systems that require a direct, unblocked path to transmit data.

Media Access Control (MAC) address: A hardware address that uniquely identifies each node on a network.

Metropolitan Area Network (MAN): A data network designed for a town or city.

Mbps: Megabits per second. A measure of bandwidth.

microbrowser: A modified Web browser that lets users get Internet data on a handheld wireless device.

MP3: An acronym for MPEG layer 3, which is a compressed audio format.

MPEG-4: Defines how multimedia streams (video, audio, text and data) are transmitted as individual objects. MPEG-4 is a compression/decompression technology that aims to achieve interactivity, efficiency and stability in narrow-band transmissions.

multiplex: Combining input signals from many sources onto a single communications path, or using a single path to transmit signals from several sources.
