Federal Communications Commission (FCC): The government agency responsible for regulating telecommunications in the United States.

firewall: A gateway that limits access between networks.

frequency: The number of times a wave-like radio signal changes from the very positive to the very negative charge per second.

gateway: A network point that acts as an entrance to another network.

Global Positioning System (GPS): A system of satellites and receiving devices used to compute positions on the Earth. GPS is used in navigation.

Global System for Mobile Communication (GSM): A European digital standard for mobile or cellular telephony.

hacker: An unauthorized user who attempts to or who gains access to an information system.

hands-free device: A device that allows drivers to use their cellular phones without lifting or holding the handset to their ears.

handshake: A method used by telecommunications and computer equipment to introduce two systems to each other.

hot spot: A wireless access point or an area that has an open wireless network.

hub: A device that splits one network cable into a set of separate cables, each connecting to a different computer.

IP address: The numeric address of a computer connected to the Internet.
